You decide how long we keep your messages and images. The setting is in your profile, under "Your data", and it applies from the moment you save it.
| Setting | Messages | Images and other files |
|---|---|---|
| Keep nothing | Not kept | Deleted after 24 hours |
| 7, 30 or 365 days | Kept for that long | Kept for that long |
| Keep everything | Kept until you delete it | Kept until you delete it |
Keeping everything is the default, because we would rather not delete something you wanted.
Images get 24 hours even when you keep no messages at all: you paid for them, and a result deleted before you could download it would be a charge for nothing.
The deletion runs once a day. So something can outlive your setting by up to a day before the sweep reaches it. We would rather say that than round it down.
An archive you ask for is kept for seven days and then deleted automatically. It contains everything on your account at the moment it was built, including things your retention setting has since removed, which is exactly why it does not sit around.
Deleting your account deletes all of the above except the accounting records. See Deleting your account.
